On Tuesday, October 4,  from 6-9PM citizens in neighborhoods throughout Texarkana, Ark., will turn their porch lights on and gather outside with friends and neighbors for the 33rd Annual National Night Out.

The Texarkana, Arkansas Police Department's Facebook page explains the importance of the evening:

National Night Out has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote “neighborhood spirit” and “community partnerships”. National Night Out, a year-long community building campaign, is designed to: (1) Heighten crime prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

If your neighborhood is interested in participating in National Night Out and would like city representatives and police officers to stop by, you'll need to register your party at 903-798-3187 or by emailing Cpl. Bennett here.

Representatives from the Police Department, Fire Department, and City Hall will start visiting the neighborhood gatherings at approximately 6PM and can answer any questions or concerns you may have about your neighborhood.

You'll need to register your neighborhood by September 30.
