For those of you who use Google as your search engine, did today’s Google Doodle remind you of Edna Mode from the Incredibles?I clicked on the picture only to find out they were celebrating the life of Edith Head. I had no idea who Edith Head was so I used Google to find out.

Edith Head was an American costume designer who won eight of the 35 nominations by the Academy Awards for Best Costume Design.

She was born in San Bernardino, California in 1897 to Max Posener and Anna Levy. She died in Los Angeles, California at the age of 87 from a rare bone marrow disease called Myelofibrosis.

After she received her undergraduate degree in French and master’s in the Romance languages, she taught French in a school in California. To earn more money, Edith said she could teach art although she only had a few classes in high school.

So Edith attended classes at Chouinard Art College to brush up on her drawing skills. It was here she met her first husband, Charles Head. After her divorce, she kept his last name for professional use.

The rest of the story can be seen through the many cinematic appearances of her customs in movies such as “The Birds“, “Vertigo“, “Roman Holiday” and “All About Eve” to name a few. I will be watching a few of these again to catch a glimpse of the woman who forever changed the way women are portrayed in the movies.
