Yeah did you catch Derby in the title? Good, because I'm not talking about the horse races, I'm talking about Texarkana's own roller derby league.

Roller Derby? Here, in Texarkana? Yes, we do have a roller derby team and more specifically they are the Quad State Derby Dames. QSDD is a non-profit roller derby league that participates in philanthropy events around town to raise money. When they hold "bouts" or competitions, partial proceeds from ticket sales go to local charities.

Anyone else heard of roller derby but have absolutely no idea how the game is played? Well, a "bout" is where you have two competing teams with five members each. A series of short match-ups called jams take place where the "jammer" (scoring player) scores points by lapping members of the opposing team.

Now that you all understand how roller derby works (if you still don't then just check out the attached video), you'll want to go see the QSDD compete with derby teams from Dallas, Shreveport and Monroe just to name a few. Your chance to see the Derby Dames in action will be on July 18th at Skate America for their Independence Brawl. Doors are set to open at 6 p.m. and the bout will start at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. There will be concession food and Texarkana's own local band Relentless will be performing at halftime! Partial proceeds from the Independence Brawl will go toward the Runnin' WJ Ranch.
