We all pee a lot, and in Africa, four teenage girls have invented an electric generator that is powered by urine.

The other day, I was all excited because I was able to fix my riding mower with some baling wire, but now this kind of puts my engineering skills in serious doubt.

Four teenage girls from Africa, 15-year-old Bello Eniola, and 14-year-olds Faleke Oluwatoyin, Akindele Abiola, and Duro-Aina Adebola have created a generator that runs on urine. The young ladies recently shared their creation with the world at Maker Faire Africa, where people unveil their innovations, inventions and ideas that address immediate challenges, and problems in the world today.

According to a post at thenextweb.com, this is how the system works,

  • Urine is put into an electrolytic cell, which cracks the urea into nitrogen, water, and hydrogen.
  • The hydrogen goes into a water filter for purification, which then gets pushed into the gas cylinder.
  • The gas cylinder pushes hydrogen into a cylinder of liquid borax, which removes the moisture from the hydrogen gas.
  • The purified hydrogen gas is pushed into the generator.
  • 1 Liter of urine gives you 6 hours of electricity.

(When I was 14-years-old, I was more interested in inventing a way that my mom wouldn't find my Playboy magazines.  Now, I will remove my baling wire creation from my lawnmower, and see if I can figure out how to fix it correctly... otherwise, I am just lazy.)
