Did you partied to hard last night watching all of the season finales on television or maybe you are one of those folks that plays trivia in the bars and lounges around town. You woke up this morning feeling lousy. Here are the five causes of your hangover symptoms and what you can do to help fix it.

According to Prevention, you get dehydrated because alcohol blocks a hormone that helps you retain water, you get a headache because you're dehydrated, you get nauseous because you produce more stomach acid, you feel tired because it messes with your sleep and you sweat because your nervous system goes haywire.

Here is the science behind the symptoms which can help you prevent it going into the night of fun:

  1. Dehydration.  When you drink, you don't produce as much vasopressin, a hormone that helps your body retain water. And without it, your kidneys send water straight to your bladder instead of reabsorbing it into your body.  That's why you constantly have to use the bathroom when you're drinking.  And it's also why you're dehydrated the next morning.
  2. Headaches.  They're caused by dehydration and all the toxins your body is dealing with.  Also, drinking too much messes with proteins in your body called cytokines, which might be what cause "blackouts" but they're still not sure.
  3. Nausea.  It's mostly caused by an increase in gastric acid in your stomach.  When you drink alcohol, your body produces more of it.
  4. Exhaustion.  It's because you don't sleep well when you're drunk.  In the middle of the night, your body readjusts to being sober, and you start tossing and turning.
  5. Sweating.  Once there's no more alcohol in your body, your sympathetic nervous system wakes up, and basically goes into overdrive.  It's also the reason people have the shakes when they're hungover.
