Recently, one of the litters of puppies that had been at the shelter for a few weeks was finally ready to be adopted into new families and those adorable chihuahua pups flew out the door fast. Unfortunately, no matter how hard the shelter staff tried, the puppies came down with Parvo and some of them died after they had been adopted into new homes. It is heartbreaking. Find out how you can help prevent this from happening again.

For the dogs, can you imagine giving birth in such a loud, cold environment? Here we are again with this sweet hound dog that just gave birth to a litter of puppies at the shelter last week. The puppies are too young to be adopted but they have a better chance of surviving if they are not in the shelter. Obviously, the best answer is to have your pets spayed and neutered so this doesn't happen. Also, make sure all of your pets are up to date on their vaccinations.

The quicker we can get the puppies out of the shelter, the better their chances are to be healthy and survive.

Litters of dogs and kittens are born in our Texarkana shelter all of the time. Unfortunately, a large percentage of those babies die. It is very sad. Baby kittens or puppies are like sponges and they pick up everything. Their little immune systems are still so fragile when they are so little. They just don’t have much of a chance of making it if they stay at the shelter. Texarkana has several rescues able and willing to take in moms and litters but they need two things, foster homes and money to afford the vet care.

If you are interested in helping, contact the shelter and let them know or contact one of the rescues listed below to offer to become a foster home. Often times a rescue will be interested in pulling animals out of the shelter but they need the vet care expenses covered. That is another way you can help.

Here are the dog rescues and groups in and around the Texarkana area and how you can reach them:

Texarkana Animal League

The animal league is comprised of volunteers and managed by a board of directors. They have a foster program to take in a limited amount of animals as long as there are foster homes available.
