‘American Idol’ Will No Longer Air Two Shows Per Week in 2015

According to sources at E! News, long-standing singing competition ‘American Idol’ will no longer be airing twice a week. Instead, the show will have both the performances and results airing in only one weekly episode.

It’s a different format for the show, and according to former Fox president Kevin Reilly, it’s been planned for quite some time. He told reporters back in May to expect something different: “The format of ‘Idol’ will change. Next year the format will be different. I think you’ll see it a two-night format, at least initially during the audition phase.” He went on to say: “It’s quite likely…we’ll end up being a two-hours show on one night for most of its run.”

Despite the fact that ratings for ‘American Idol’ are not nearly as strong as they once were, it remains one of Fox’s most successful shows, so cutting down to one show per week does come as a bit of a shock for fans.

It was announced earlier this year that Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr., will all be back to reprise their roles as judges in the upcoming season of ‘American Idol,’ while in-house mentor and former panel judge Randy Jackson has parted ways with the show. Scott Borchetta (who originally signed Taylor Swift to Big Machine) will be taking his place as in-house mentor.

You can catch the debut of season 14 of ‘American Idol’ when it airs on Jan. 7.
