There’s some understandable trepidation from Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans, as the fourth season’s “Framework” feels like one final victory lap with departed series stars. There’s also Marvel’s Inhumans taking the spotlight in September, but according to a new report, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 is almost a done deal.

We’ve heard before that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was likely to be renewed for “one more assignment,” but with Uprfront and pilot orders gearing up over the next few weeks, the ground could easily have shifted. According to Deadline’s latest assessment, however, “Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., which serves as a solid marketing platform for the Disney-owned Marvel, also is getting renewed I hear.”

Mind you, there’s no guarantee that a fifth season would fill the same twenty-two episode order as the first four years, or that ABC might make Season 5 the last. Another twelve episodes would bring S.H.I.E.L.D. to a robust 100, and it might make sense of ABC to concentrate its fall promotions on The Inhumans, and place Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 at midseason 2018, much as Agent Carter used to air.

We’ll know for sure in the next two weeks, but it certainly sounds like Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans can rest easy. In the meantime, check out the latest from Tuesday’s penultimate Season 4 episode “The Return” below.
